Oh how the mighty squirrel has fallen!!!
So I was walking my dogs during lunch, and as always, when I gave them each a treat, Sheffield quickly gobbled his down and walked right alongside Miss Fine, his mug right in her face as she chewed, just waiting to see if she’d drop a scrap. We stopped to chat with one of my neighbors, and all of a sudden there’s a series of loud knocks in the trees up above, and then a really hard thud against the sidewalk nearby. And there lies a completely stunned squirrel! The poor thing had fallen out of the tree, and from what I could hear, it bounced off quite a few branches on its way down. It hurried back up onto a six foot fence (mostly because my dogs were like ‘maimed squirrel!’ as they tried to pull me in that direction), but it didn’t look so hot. Hopefully it survived. Oddly, this is along the same exact fence where Sheffy snagged that little bird in the story I told a couple of posts back! That stretch of sidewalk and fence must be cursed.
Amazingly, this isn’t the first time I’ve witnessed a squirrel fall from a tree. Way back in the early 80s, a bunch of us kids were playing kickball in my neighbor’s driveway, which ran right alongside my family’s driveway where my brother’s station wagon was parked, when all of a sudden, there was a huge tin thud on the roof of his car. Lucky for us, it wasn’t the result of our kick ball. Unlucky, though, for a squirrel that had fallen about two stories from the tree above! That squirrel had also sat stunned, but finally sprinted off the car roof and back into the tree.
